Insemination and ICSI are not the same step

One happens in the body. The other happens in the laboratory. The finding decides which one is discussed.

Insemination and ICSI are not the same step

People often use one phrase for every fertility treatment. Insemination and ICSI answer different problems.

Insemination A semen sample is prepared and placed in the uterus around ovulation. The egg is still released and fertilized inside the body. Tubes need to be open. Very low sperm counts make this a poor fit.

ICSI ICSI is part of an IVF cycle. Eggs are collected, and a single sperm is injected into each egg in the laboratory. Embryos are then cultured and transferred or frozen. It is used when sperm findings, previous fertilization, or the overall plan calls for it.

How a clinic chooses The choice follows tubes, semen, age, ovarian reserve, and how long you have tried. It is not a ladder you must climb one step at a time if the tests already point past insemination. It is also not a reason to start with the most complex step when a simpler one still fits.
