When to seek a fertility consultation

A practical guide to timing the first visit, without turning every month of trying into an emergency.

When to seek a fertility consultation

Most couples are advised to ask for help after a year of trying when the woman is under 35, and after six months when she is 35 or older. Those are planning points, not a rule that forbids an earlier conversation.

Come sooner in a few situations Very irregular periods, a known semen problem, previous pelvic surgery, or a medical treatment that may affect the ovaries or testes are reasons not to wait out the full year. Recurrent miscarriage is its own appointment, even if conceiving itself has not been difficult.

What the first hour is for The visit gathers history from both partners and looks at tests you already have. It does not usually finish with a treatment start date. It finishes with a short list: repeat this test, add that one, or no further test is useful yet.

What you can do before you book Note how long you have been trying, cycle length, and any operations or long-term medicines. Bring papers if you have them. A consultation is more useful with both of you in the room.
