Semen testing, medical treatment, and surgical sperm retrieval when sperm are not present in the ejaculate.
A fertility plan looks at both partners. Male-factor findings range from a mild change in count or movement to no sperm in the ejaculate. The first step is a proper semen analysis and a history, not an assumption about cause.
What the visit covers
Previous tests, illnesses, operations, medicines, and how long you have been trying. A repeat analysis is often useful if the last one was done elsewhere or a long time ago. Hormone tests or an examination are added when the result calls for them.
Treatment paths
Some findings are followed with medicine or by treating a correctable problem such as a varicocele, coordinated with a urology colleague when surgery is the right tool. When sperm are absent from the ejaculate, surgical retrieval can be planned so that any sperm found are used with ICSI. Freezing a sample before a later cycle is also discussed.
For the partner
You do not need a completed female work-up before this visit. If both of you can attend, the plan is easier to explain in one room.
